To feed electric furnaces, global steel makers rely on a mix of raw materials, including ferrous scrap, much of which is exported from the largest reservoir of steel scrap, the United States. 

The quantity of ferrous scrap exports from the U.S. to countries such as Turkey, China, Taiwan and South Korea may seem staggering, but shredded scrap exports account for less than one third of the overall total.

Almost 90% of states in the U.S. operate shredders.

The consumer buying price per gross ton of shredded scrap for the Chicago region over the past five years has fluctuated dramatically.

Whereas the price of shredded scrap exported from the U.S. East Coast has remained fairly consistent over the same period.

With that said, is there too much shredding muscle in the U.S.?
